What are Sweeps ?

Whales use Sweeps to quickly execute trades and to help conceal their large orders. Sweeps are often associated with urgency and also help the Whale stay under the radar by utilizing smart-routing technology to split their total large order into multiple smaller orders that SWEEP across multiple exchanges to fill quickly. Sweeps execute within microseconds of each other and print to the tape as those smaller orders. Our system detects these orders and presents the total combined order.

Sweep Orders
One large order is split in to multiple smaller orders that fill ON ONE EXCHANGE in different sized orders. Prints to the tape as multiple different sized orders.
WhaleStream consolidates SWEEPS into one total order.
Sweep Options Flow

What are Splits ?

Much like Sweeps, Whales use Splits to quickly execute trades and to help conceal their large orders. Splits are often associated with urgency (slightly less urgent than Sweeps) and also help the Whale stay under the radar by breaking up one large order and SPLITTING their total large order into multiple smaller blocks that all get filled ON ONE EXCHANGE. Splits execute within microseconds of each other and print to the tape as those smaller blocks orders to conceal their total size. Our system detects these orders and presents the total combined order.

Split Orders
One large order is split in to multiple smaller orders that fill across multiple exchanges in different sized orders. Prints to the tape as multiple different sized orders.
WhaleStream consolidates SPLITS into one total order.
Split Options Flow

What are Option Blocks ?

Option Blocks are simply just 1:1 trades. An option block is a single buyer and a single seller. The entire order is filled as one large order and is printed to the tape as such. Option Blocks don't typically represent as much urgency as a sweep or split, but they are still worth paying attention to.

Option Block Orders
One large order filled completely between one buyer and one seller on one exchange.
WhaleStream displays BLOCKS as they would show on the tape.
Option Blocks Flow

What are Dark Pools ?

Dark Pools are private exchanges only accessible to institutions used to conceal and execute extremely large orders away from the public market. Institutions use dark pools to fill extremely large orders without impacting the market which allows them to get their entire order filled at much more desirable price. There is no public order book for dark pools so the institution’s trading intentions are not released to the general public. WhaleStream displays the dark pool data as it is made available.

Dark Pool Orders
Institution 1 wants to sell a large block of shares of an equity.
Institution 2 wants to buy a large block of shares of the same equity.
The 2 institutions privately negotiate and execute the trade on the dark pool and remain undetected by the general public.

Where does WhaleStream get their data from?
WhaleStream receives its OPRA data directly from the exchange in real-time. All of our options data is real-time and our Darkpool data is delayed by 15 minutes due to exchange requirements.
What Are Dark Pools?
Dark Pools are private exchanges only available to institutions. Dark Pool trades allow institutions to trade large quantities of shares of stocks/equities without having the order show up on public order books. Dark Pool trades include institutions on both sides of the trade, one institution is buying the shares from another institution. Dark Pools have a bad reputation among retail traders due to the lack of transparency and in many cases, delayed reporting of trades. To learn more about Dark Pools, please check our detailed write up on dark pools, What are Dark Pools?
What is Option Flow?
In simplest form, Options Flow is the time and sales on the options market. Options flow is used to find large and unusual options trades to see where big institutions and other traders are putting their money. WhaleStream scans across the entire options market in real-time and filters out the noise while pointing out important trade details so you can quickly gain insight into WHERE institutions and whales are investing WHEN they are investing.
What if I want to cancel before my trial is over?
You can cancel your subscription at any time by going to your account settings under the billing tab. Once you cancel, you will still have access to the dashboard until the end of your trial or at the end of your billing cycle. When you start a trial, you are immediately sent an email to let you know the day that your trial will be over. You can go to your billing settings immediately and cancel to avoid your subscription from auto renewing (You will still get to enjoy the remainder of your trial after setting your subscription to cancel).

How do you know if a trade is a buy or a sale?
While there is no way to know for certain, common practice is to compare the trade price to the bid and ask spread at the time of the trade. If a trade is executed on the ask side (above the mid price), it is assumed to be a buy. If a trade is executed on the bid side (below the mid price) it is assumed to be a sale. These are assumptions based on supply and demand mentality… A buyer paying the ask price indicates that they want in NOW and are willing to pay whatever it takes. On the other hand, a seller accepting the bid indicates that they want out and are willing to take what they can get. For more information on bid/ask and determining buys and sales, please check our detailed write-up, How to determine Buy vs Sales Options Flow.
What is the Top Options Flow Tool?
Our Top Options Flow tool is a general overview of the Large and Unusual whale option flow that has come in during the day. The Top Option Flow is ranked by total premium traded on the ASK side for both puts and calls. The tool does not include orders filled on the bid side.

It’s a great way to scan for which symbols are getting a lot of attention during the day and further investigate the flow that makes up that total premium. Always be sure to examine the orders that make up the top flow and look at both sides of the market. Deep ITM or far dated positions can sometimes make a symbol seem more bullish/bearish than they may actually be if you strictly go off premium.

How do I join the WhaleStream Discord server?
